Passionate about shaping the 5Ds of the energy future—Decentralization, Decarbonization, Disruption, Democratization, and Digitization—Sebastian Groh has dedicated his career to building innovative energy solutions for the Global South.
As Founder & CEO of SOLshare, a green utility company based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, he pioneered the world’s first peer-to-peer solar energy exchange, recognized by the World Economic Forum in 2018. Under his leadership, SOLshare has raised $7.8 million in growth capital and received international accolades including World’s Best Energy Startup (Free Electrons, 2018), Earthshot Prize Finalist (2021), and Zayed Sustainability Prize Winner (2022).
Sebastian holds a PhD from Aalborg University/TU Berlin on energy poverty and innovation in Bangladesh and Peru, with widely cited publications on decentralized electrification. Alongside entrepreneurship, he serves as a Professor at BRAC University, teaching the OSUN International Certificate in Sustainability & Social Enterprise.
His work has been recognized globally, with honors such as WEF Tech Pioneer (2018), Ashoka Fellow (2018), and UBS Global Visionary (2019). Most recently, Sebastian is driving SOLshare’s transformation of Bangladesh’s e-mobility sector through the Rickshaw Virtual Power Plant (R-VPP), a groundbreaking initiative turning millions of electric three-wheelers into a decentralized energy network.
